A fixed RFID reader is permanently installed at a location — such as a warehouse gate, conveyor, dock door, or production line entry point — to automatically read every tagged item that passes through without any manual action. A handheld RFID reader is portable, allowing operators to walk through a zone and scan multiple tags simultaneously. Fixed readers are best for automated checkpoints; handheld readers are better for cycle counts, spot checks, and flexible inventory tasks. Metal surfaces and liquids interfere with standard UHF RFID — specialised on-metal tags and directional antennas are used to compensate.
