Direct thermal labels use heat-sensitive paper that darkens when the printhead applies heat — no ribbon is needed, which reduces consumable cost and simplifies printer operation. However, direct thermal prints are susceptible to fading from heat, light, and chemicals — making them suitable for short-lived labels like shipping labels and receipts. Thermal transfer labels are produced using a ribbon (wax, wax-resin, or resin) that is heat-transferred onto the label substrate. The resulting print is far more durable, resistant to heat, UV, chemicals, and abrasion — the right choice for warehouse identification, manufacturing traceability, and any label that must remain legible for months or years.

For most warehouse and manufacturing applications, polyester or polypropylene thermal transfer labels are recommended — they offer durability, moisture resistance, and strong adhesion to cartons, pallets, and parts. For high-temperature environments, chemical environments, or outdoor applications, polyester labels with a resin ribbon provide the highest durability. For cable and wire identification, heat-shrinkable labels are purpose-designed to conform tightly to cylindrical surfaces.
